Chancellor's Friday Letters

Chancellor White’s “Special” Friday Letter of November 21, 2012

Chancellor White’s “Special” Friday Letter of November 21, 2012

November 21, 2012

Dear Friends,

As we head into the Thanksgiving break, I offer a welcome, a clarification, a hope, and a wish.

Please join me in extending a hearty Highlander welcome to Jane Conoley, who will join UCR as the interim chancellor in January. I am delighted with her appointment. You can learn more at the URL listed below.

I seek to clarify something I wrote last Friday about the responsibility for designing the innovations needed to meet the nation’s – and UCR’s – goals of educating 60% of the adult population.  I received several letters indicating I wasn’t clear. The point I was trying to make by using former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates’s humorous characterization of the government wasn’t to denigrate government per se, but rather to make the point that we should share the responsibility for the destiny of higher education.

My hope is that those involved in conflict around the globe will find a way to put down their guns, rockets, and stones, and take up the necessary talks, concessions, courage and vision for a safer future.  These conflicts affect so many of our students and families – we hold all of you in our thoughts.

And my wish is that you have the very best Thanksgiving… a chance to enjoy family and friends both in person and virtually. Find time to reflect on those people in your life that you are most thankful for, and tell them so.

And whether you are by yourself, or with friends and family, find time for some extra joy, laughter, food and beverage.

I know you join me in recognizing that there are many people who will have less to be thankful for than we do… I hope you can find a way to share a warm smile, a warm meal, or a warm coat with someone in need.

Below is a picture intended to bring a smile; I hope it is visible to you directly, but if not try this link.

The next regular Friday Letter will be Friday, December 7.

Welcome to interim chancellor
UC President Mark Yudof has named an interim chancellor for the campus, so please join me in welcoming Jane Close Conoley, a dean from UC Santa Barbara, who will do an excellent job leading the campus to advance our vision for 2020. I will be working closely with Dr. Conoley to facilitate a seamless transition.

Building a pipeline
UC Riverside is seeing an increase in federal money that will help us build a robust pipeline of graduate students, which will eventually lead to more candidates for professorships. Three UCR departments earned these grants from the U.S. Department of Education, which are aptly named: Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN). Congratulations to all.

November is the chance
This is the month when thousands of students are applying for admission to the UC system. If you have a young person in your life wavering between campuses, take a look at all the reasons why UC Riverside is the place to be.
